Zanzibar: The festival is one week away and excitement is reaching fever pitch in Zanzibar as curious revellers seek to know more about the headline artists for the 2018 edition of the Sauti za Busara.
With over 40 groups to choose one would think they are spoilt for choice, but from the look of things there are certain names that are already attracting attention on the Island.
Names of headline artistes such as Kidum, Zakes Bantwini, Somi, Kasai All Stars, Makadem, Ribab Fusion and Saida Karoli are turning out to be among the most sought after.
Zakes Bantwini is one of the eight South African artists to perform at the Sauti za Busara with others such as Thandiswa and Kwani Experience having been on the same stage a couple of years ago. With several club-banging hits under his belt including Clap Your Hands, Wasting My Time, Ghetto and Bang, Bang, Bang under his belt, he is sure to draw fans from across southern Africa.
Despite having performed in Tanzania on several occasions, Kidum & the Boda Boda Band makes their debut appearance at the festival where Kidum is excited to share new songs alongside many number one radio hits from the six studio albums that he has released since 2001.
Born in USA to immigrants from Rwanda and Uganda, acclaimed vocalist and songwriter Somi, who released ‘Petite Afrique’ in 2017, continues to craft an original way of song making that straddles the worlds of African jazz, soul and pop that has won her admiration from across the globe.
For Saida Karoli, the show at Sauti za Busara is set to rebirth the international career of one of Tanzania’s best-loved artistes. After a long period off the scene, public interest was reignited in 2017 by Diamond Platnumz’ cover of her most famous song ‘Maria Salome’. Saida Karoli says she is greatly looking forwards to visit the festival for her second time, to reconnect with fans from near and far, who treasure her unique energy and creativity that will represent Tanzania on the global stage.
It has to be said that according to Journey Ramadhan, the festival manager, all the groups that were selected for Sauti za Busara 2018 are stars in their own right, both on the continent and elsewhere.
“This year’s line-up could be the hottest that we have ever had and that is why the selection process took a bit longer than usual, but I can understand if people are sticking with certain particular choices that represent their taste of music,” said Mr Ramadhan.
With the stage already set at the Old Fort, he says his team has taken care of all the niggles that can easily spoil festivals such as poor sound, lighting or other technical issues.
“We have taken care of that department and other related issues to make sure that it is an experience that that is worth relishing by every festival goer. These experiences are what revellers look forward to, without which then it is just an ordinary gig,” he said.
