Akizungumza na Waandishi wa Habari leo Mei 25, 2023, Meneja wa bandari hiyo, Masoud Athumani Mrisha amesema baada ya maboresho hayo mpaka sasa wameshaingiza meli sita zenye urefu mita kati ya 150 mpaka 200 kwa kipindi cha miezi mitatu, ambazo hapo awali hazikuweza kutia nanga bandarini hapo kutokana na kina kidogo cha maji, huku akiwataka wateja wa mikoa hiyo ya Kaskazini na nchi jirani waitumie kwakua imezaliwa upya baada ya maboresho.
“Kabla ya maboresho ya bandari yetu kwa mwaka tulikuwa tunapokea shehena tani laki saba na nusu, lakini baada ya maboresho haya sasa tunakwenda mpaka tani milioni 3 kwa mwaka, pia gharama za uendeshaji zimepungua kwa maana ya kupakia na kushusha mizigo kutoka meli kubwa kwenda Matishari kisha kushusha tena. Vilevile zamani tulihudumia meli moja kwa siku nane sasa tunaihudumia kwa siku nne. Hata kodi sasa itapatikana kwa wingi kwakuwa shehena imeongezeka,” alisema Mrisha.
Akiongelea mchakato mzima wa upanuzi wa bandari hiyo ulivyokuwa Meneja Mrisha amesema, Serikali kupitia Mamlaka ya Bandari nchini ilianza mradi wa kuboresha bandari ya Tanga kwa awamu mbili. Awamu ya kwanza ilianza tarehe 3/8/2019, awamu hiyo ilikuwa ni ya kipindi cha mwaka mmoja, ilikua ni kuongeza kina cha maji kwenye mlango bahari, kutoka mita 3 mpaka 13, huku upana wa mlango ukienda mpaka mita 73.
